Celebrating 100 Years of Excellence: Greenwood and Coope’s Centennial Anniversary

July 2024
This year marks a momentous milestone for us at Cormar Carpets as we celebrate the centennial anniversary of our parent company, Greenwood and Coope Ltd. This celebration not only honours a century of business excellence but also reflects on the rich history and evolution that has shaped Cormar Carpets into the largest carpet brand in the UK today. A Century of Innovation and Growth Incorporated in 1924, Greenwood and Coope Ltd quickly emerged as a prominent player in the textile industry. Over time, the company diversified its operations, which led to the establishment of Cormar Carpets in 1956. Cormar was the first company to introduce modern tufted machine technology to the UK, quickly gaining a reputation for quality and innovation in carpet manufacturing—a reputation we proudly uphold today as industry leaders. Family Values and Team Spirit As a family-run business with family values at heart, our success is largely due to the incredible team of people who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Their dedication ensures that we provide first-class delivery service to our customers. To celebrate this remarkable milestone, we hosted a summer celebration across our sites for all our staff to enjoy, recognising their invaluable contributions to our journey. Looking Ahead As we celebrate 100 years of Greenwood and Coope Ltd, we remain steadfast in our commitment to our core values of quality, innovation, and excellent customer service. Our history is a testament to our ability to adapt and thrive amidst changing times. Voted Best Carpet Manufacturer 2022

Voted Best Carpet Manufacturer 2022

August 2022
For the tenth year in succession Cormar Carpet Company is delighted to be voted the UK’s Best Carpet Manufacturer by readers of Interiors Monthly. Receiving the award again is a great privilege and we would like to say a huge thank you to all our customers, suppliers and colleagues for their ongoing support over the past year. We have been manufacturing carpet in the UK for more than 65 years from our mills in Lancashire. The key to our success has been our amazing team of people that work behind the scenes to ensure a first-class delivery service to retail, wholesale and contract customers. In addition to the team spirit, we have continued to invest over the past 12 months. In the last year, three new ranges have been successfully launched into the trade. We have expanded our family of easy clean carpets with the addition of Primo Tweeds and Linwood, followed by the introduction of Riva, a luxurious deep-pile carpet offering a balance between the practical living qualities of easy-clean polypropylene carpet and the sumptuous feeling of a soft deep carpet. This year has also seen the relaunch of our popular Apollo Plus range, now available in an extensive palette of 22 heather and plain shades. Another service enhancement has been our award-winning Trade Portal. Since its launch in 2011, the portal has gone from strength to strength with 59% of customers now placing orders via the online service. With a host of new features introduced this year, the portal is now better than ever, making it the place to go for online trading amongst carpet retailers. In the past year, we have invested over £75,000 towards improvements such as a full system re-build, a brand new after-sales area, and a number of other features which have been highly requested by portal users; enabling customers to carry out most of their interactions with Cormar online, should they choose to do so. This year also marks the completion of one of Cormar’s largest investments in its Backing Plant. Over £600,000 has been invested in the plant this year, as part of an overall upgrade strategy. The recent work involved the replacement of the front-end entry equipment which is responsible for preparing unbacked rolls prior to latex application. Taking 12 months to complete, the Backing Plant is now benefitting from improvements in runnability and quality - as well as a cleaner, more modern looking plant. Cormar has been at the forefront of carpet manufacturing for the last seven decades. Key to its success is its family business philosophy, as David Cormack, Marketing Director at Cormar said: “To be awarded the Best Carpet Manufacturer for the tenth year in a row is a huge honour for all at Cormar Carpets. This year we’ve made huge investments in the business that take us forward as a dynamic and leading-edge player in the market, so it’s great for the Cormar team to be recognised once again for the hard work and determination that they have put in.”
Introducing Riva

Introducing Riva

May 2022
This Spring, we are introducing our latest range, Riva – a luxurious deep-pile carpet in a modern palette of plain colours. Building upon the ongoing popularity of our Sensation ranges, Riva brings a new dimension to our family of soft deep-pile carpets - providing a balance between the practical living qualities of easy-clean polypropylene carpet and the sumptuous feeling of a soft deep carpet. The range will be available in 16 stylish plain shades including a strong collection of popular greys and warm neutrals, alongside some bolder colour choices; giving home-owners outstanding choice to complement any interior design. Marketing Director, David Cormack said: “We are living in a time of high inflation, so Riva is perfectly timed for the market. It offers fabulous value in the soft deep pile market sector and has great consumer appeal. The combination of the firmer handle of our easy clean carpets, together with the softness of a multi-filament yarn makes it a real winner.” Riva is manufactured from two-ply yarn and is both bleach cleanable and stain resistant. It also includes a 10-year stain and wear guarantee. Also due to its resilient properties, Riva is suitable for use all around the home, although it is clearly a classic for bedrooms and nurseries, spaces in the home where extra softness is desired. As well as bringing a new bank of on-trend shades to our family of soft deep-pile carpets, Riva will be displayed on our new-look point of sale material, featuring an eye-catching design and communicating the ranges key benefits to the consumer.

Interiors Monthly Award Winner 2021

Interiors Monthly Award Winner 2021

August 2021
For the ninth year in succession Cormar Carpet Company is delighted to be voted the UK’s “Best Carpet Manufacturer” by readers of Interiors Monthly. Taking home the award again is a great privilege and we would like to say a huge thank you to all our customers, suppliers and business colleagues for their ongoing support over what has been a very turbulent year. Twelve months ago, when we last lifted the award, the world was in the grip of a global pandemic, and everyone had to readjust to incorporate all the changes which COVID-19 had bought. However, in 2021, the year in which we celebrate our 65th Birthday, we are still busy manufacturing in the UK and going from strength to strength. The key to our success has been our amazing team of people that work behind the scenes to ensure a first-class delivery service to all our customers. In addition to the team spirit, we have continued to invest throughout the pandemic. In the last year two new ranges have been successfully launched. The first was Inglewood Saxony, a deep pile polypropylene saxony carpet, launched in the summer of 2020. The second, Woodland Heather Twist launched earlier in the spring of this year is an 80% wool twist produced in two qualities in a strong collection of heather shades. Marketing Director David Cormack has said: “To be awarded the Best Carpet Manufacturer for the ninth year in a row is a huge honour for all at Cormar Carpets and is testament to the way that the team has pulled together and worked so hard over the past year. “We still manufacture all our carpet in Great Britain and the fact that we also own and control our own delivery fleet has especially paid dividends this year – providing further reliability at a time of uncertainty for many. The recent investment in the Southern Regional Distribution Centre in Hemel Hempstead has also been a tremendous attribute this year, allowing us to flex with the unusually high demand.” Another service which is thriving is Cormar’s award-winning trade portal, it is now used by over 50% of our customers. The online service is the market leader in the carpet trade giving retailers the opportunity to quickly place orders, receive a delivery date and check stock levels in real time, ensuring prompt delivery times for end customers. As David concluded: “Over the past 65 years we have grown the brand immensely and this year, in spite of the pandemic and restrictions looks like it will be another successful one! And for that I’d like to say a big thank you for the support our customers give us.”

Cormar Service & Brexit

Cormar Service & Brexit

February 2019
It's a year now since we moved into our new Southern Regional Distribution Centre in Hemel Hempstead. This investment in 130,000 sq ft of warehouse space, incorporating two new cut length machines, a sortation system and new loading bays, has undoubtedly helped Cormar improve our delivery service to retailers in the South, and by liberating space at Brookhouse Mill has also improved service in the north of the UK as well.  In fact, in the run-up to Christmas and the early part of 2019, our delivery performance to our customers has consistently exceeded 96%, which we are sure will have helped you run your business and plan your fitting schedules.  This brings us to the outlook for the next few months, whatever your views are on Brexit, one thing is absolutely certain - the Earth will continue to spin on its axis after 29th March! Which is why, here at Cormar, we've been working hard internally and with our overseas yarn and raw material suppliers to build stock, in case of any disruption at the UK ports. We already hold significant yarn stocks at our sites around the UK, which means that we have simply been able to extend that facility.  Clearly, the nature of uncertainty cannot prepare us for all eventualities, but for Cormar, having carpet manufacturing, storage and distribution here in the UK will undoubtedly be an advantage in the case of a disruptive Brexit.  So, going forward, please be assured that we are doing everything we can to ensure we continue to support you and your customers, with the award-winning service that you are accustomed to from Cormar Carpet Company.
More Choice From Cormar

More Choice From Cormar

January 2019
A new colour palette is behind the relaunch of Cormar Carpet Company’s Primo Choice range. The stain resistant heather collection, originally launched in 2012, has extended its colour bank to 15 shades and been infused with nine new contemporary hues, including Zinc and Light Azore, as well as retaining six of the original best-selling shades.  Made from 100% Excellon polypropylene fibre and available in two qualities, "Elite" and "Super", Primo Choice has all the easy clean, stain resistant and bleach cleanable qualities of Cormar’s other Primo ranges. It is a two-ply yarn, tufted on 10th gauge for a finer look and improved pile density and performance. And from 2019, Primo Choice also comes with Cormar’s increasingly popular 10 Year Stain and Wear Warranty. “We had such a great reaction to the relaunch of our Apollo Plus and Primo Ultra collections – both 10th gauge twist piles, so it made sense to reinvigorate this range,” said David Cormack, marketing director at Cormar.  “After six years, colour trends have moved on and now there is a demand for a more urban palette of greys and stony neutrals among consumers. And with two weights and price points available, it gives both the retailer and consumer, more choice.” Cormar Carpet Company produces all its carpet ranges from two sites near Bury, Lancashire and through its new regional distribution centre is in Hemel Hempstead, with a network of out-bases throughout the UK.
New Additions to Cormar's Fleet

New Additions to Cormar's Fleet

November 2018
Award-winning manufacturer Cormar Carpet Company is all set to drive forward into 2019 with new additions to its delivery fleet – the first to feature the new look branding. The 12 new trucks bring the total to 77 vehicles, just in time for the busiest period of the year. It is the largest manufacturer owned carpet fleet in the industry – and will showcase Cormar’s new livery, as well as providing significant changes to the configuration of the trucks. Said Gary Mitchell, Cormar’s distribution manager: “The extra 12 vehicles represent an investment of over £1.5m as part of the rolling annual fleet replacement programme. This is on top of the major multi-million-pound investment in the Southern Regional Distribution centre at Hemel Hempstead and the redevelopment of our brand look and identity. Further customised adaptations to the cabs include extra driver safety features –improved lighting, non-slip flooring plus adapted ladders and handles for safer and more efficient handling. “The new vehicles will optimise the fleet, meeting the increase in demand in the peak period up to Christmas and ensure we maintain our high standards of service for our retail customers. With over 170,000 deliveries per year, the fleet needs constant investment to ensure that Cormar are number one in the carpet trade for service and reliability.” It was over five decades ago that Cormar decided to make door-to-door delivery to retailers part of its service. Now from its base in Bury, Lancashire and it’s newly built southern distribution centre in Hemel Hempstead, Cormar delivers right across the UK direct to retailers and also through 27 strategically located collection centres, offering a 48-hour nationwide turnaround service to customers.
National Flooring Show 2018

National Flooring Show 2018

September 2018
Displaying their recently updated new branding, Cormar once again exhibited at the industry’s main flooring trade show, in the North Yorkshire spa town of Harrogate. This year though, in addition to main carpet stand, the company promoted their award winning ‘Trade Portal’ – an online ordering interface for trade customers, on an adjacent stand. The trade exhibition which takes place every Autumn in Harrogate, has been held there for over 50 years. Once again attendance was good and Cormar played host to many of their customers from the UK and Ireland. This year, the ranges that were promoted at the show included the year’s new and re-launched qualities, Apollo Comfort, Home Counties Plains and Apollo Plus. In addition a new range called Gemini was previewed at the show, ready for it’s launch in October. Commenting on the show, David Cormack Marketing Director said; The Harrogate Flooring Exhibition has always been a great success for Cormar – our customers know where we are and whether they choose to come every year or every other year, they are always guaranteed a warm welcome.’   ‘Fortunately this year we were able to take more space at the show, with a stand to specially promote our Trade Portal. This gave us a great opportunity to explain the new features to existing users, as well as customers that have not already used it. Over 40% of our orders are now placed online via the portal, so it made sense to have a stand dedicated to this service.’

Cormar Carpet Co - Best Of British

September 2018
Cormar have been voted "Best Carpet Manufacturer 2018" by retailers and readers of leading trade Magazine, Interiors Monthly. David Cormack, Marketing Director, explains what this means for Cormar... Winning Best Carpet Manufacturer adds another element of success to a notable year for the Cormar Carpet Company which recently unveiled a brand new look – the first corporate update in over a quarter of a century. “To be voted Best Carpet Manufacturer, for the sixth consecutive year, by the readers of Interiors Monthly is an incredible achievement,” said David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar, one of the UK’s leading carpet manufacturers. “This year we’ve made huge investments in the business that take us forward as a dynamic and leading edge player in the market so it’s great for the Cormar team to be recognised once again for the hard work and determination that they have put in.” At the start of the year, Cormar opened the doors to a new 130,000 sq ft distribution centre, based in Hemel Hempstead, which consolidated and strengthened its national distribution network across the South of England. The multi-million pound infrastructure houses two cut length machines and a sortation system which allows Cormar to stock up to 2,500 rolls of carpet. Last month, the company launched its new look as the ‘Cormar Carpet Company’ reflecting its ongoing specialism in carpets. Developed with the consumer at the forefront of the redesign and following extensive research, the intention is to bring a more ‘home furnishing’ style to the brand and drive traffic through to retailers. “While we may have a fresh image, we are still maintaining the company’s core values: family owned and British made and the brand will continue to be supported with high-performing products, excellent customer service and an efficient delivery service,” said David.

DOMOTEX 2018

DOMOTEX 2018

February 2018
On 12-15 January, Cormar exhibited at Domotex, in Hannover (Germany), the world’s largest annual international flooring show. It’s a great showcase for Cormar to meet potential international customers and an opportunity to meet with our suppliers!   Our directors, Regional Sales Managers and Export Sales Manager, Robert Mulder were all present. From the production & development side of our company, Craig Rumens and Jason Clarke completed the Domotex Team.   We met with many of our key UK and international customers, giving chance to discuss current business as well as our new ranges.   After years of recession, it was apparent that people were smiling again! Customers are usually reluctant to pay for samples, displays and wall units, but this year it did not seem to be an issue at all. When customers spend money on sampling, they will make a much bigger effort to sell our products in order to win their investments back!   Just like in previous years, our Cormar stand looked fabulous, giving us the right image of the professional company we are! Although this year we moved from Hall 5 to Hall 11, together with most European carpet manufacturers, we had a great location again being clearly visible from all angles.   While our market is predominantly the UK, the demand for our carpets internationally continues to increase. Therefore, Domotex is a golden opportunity to show our carpet collection to an international audience, including the most recent new ranges such as Soft Focus Heathers, Sensation Heathers and Apollo Plus & Elite. Being able to exhibit our entire product range presented on nice wall units was also very useful.   When we travel and visit our customers, sales people are usually restricted in bringing samples over. Therefore having a nice big stand with great product presentations makes life a lot easier.! A huge “Thank you” to everybody for making this exhibition successful again!
New Trucks at Cormar Carpets

New Trucks at Cormar Carpets

December 2017
To support the growth in the business, once again we have turned to DAF to purchase 10 new trucks. This has enabled us underpin the network and deliver our peak volumes. Lead times on trucks and the specialised equipment needed for our operation are growing due to higher demand on the engineering companies that build the chassis and bodies. This results in us having to place these orders very early in the year. Once an order is placed we carefully monitor our suppliers to ensure they meet their deadline. This year we had a number of emergency meetings to keep the pressure on the chassis builder, to deliver on time, as they were faced with their own supply problems. With the opening of the SRDC we will be moving away from the cross-docking of carpets and moving back to the demount box trunking operation. This gives us improves vehicle efficiency and improves quality, as a consequence of less manual handling. However it also means we had to reconfigure the fleet to accommodate this. So earlier this year in March, we ordered 8 new CF75s with specialist drawbar chassis to cover the "trunking" of trailers with loaded boxes. We also ordered 2 LF55s with the ability to run with demountable bodies. As the photos show, the trucks look great and over the busy Autumn they have been put to good use! Cormar continue to invest in commercial fleet in other ways too, example, by providing our drivers with the latest technology such as lane departure warnings and assisted braking.

NEW Apollo Elite set to take-off...

October 2017
This autumn, Cormar Carpets is launching another new carpet collection that is simply out of this world!   Apollo Elite joins Cormar’s easy clean family using the same 100% Excellon fibre as its sister range, Apollo Plus. It is tufted on 1/10thth gauge machinery and features a colour bank of 14 popular shades – four plains and 10 heathers – with a core of greys and neutrals including Campsie Cliff and Grey Partridge.   “Apollo Plus has been a successful entry level range for us, over the past four years,” said David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets. “Now we felt the time was right to introduce a great value, more premium-led collection.   “We’ve taken the same concept and developed the yarn, as well as increasing the pile height and weight to engineer a premier product that is still fantastic value-for-moneyand which looks and feels fantastic. Given the uncertain economic climate, this well priced carpet range will appeal to new homeowners and those on a budget who want to bring affordable quality and style into their home.”   In line with other members of Cormar’s easy clean family of products, Apollo Elite is bleach cleanable and stain resistant, carrying a 10 year wear and stain warranty. It is expected to retail under £20 sq m and comes in both 4m and 5m widths.   All Cormar’s stain resistant polypropylene carpets, as well as it’s wool twists and wool loops are produced on site as its Lancashire mills and distributed in the UK and Eire via its own delivery fleet.
